About Communication

In general, good communication means a degree of understanding from all parties involved, whether it be through words, images, signs etc. The person trying to convey a message needs to articulate his or her thoughts in a clear and preferably simple way. This requires the individual sending the message to consider the recipient's level of understanding, whether it be language or literacy. Conversely, the recipient needs to try to see the point of view and motives of said individual. All parties involved need to express deficiencies ahead of time to avoid any potential misunderstandings. Just be mindful of the situation and assess how to properly and effectively communicate your ideas and thoughts.

With all that said, expressing an idea through images or videos might be a more effective way of communicating depending on the situation. That is the basic idea behind using a podcast: to teach others through a creative medium. Entertain the audience. Grab their attention and keep their interest. However, keep in mind that there are messages that will need to be conveyed in the podcast. An excessively ambitious plot might cloud the the actual message of the video.

  1. I think it's really interesting how you mentioned the need to establish a base and assess the situation. A lot of communication, especially when dealing with different languages, creates a perfectly natural barrier to communication and it should be noted that not all communication can be 100% efficient.

  2. I pretty much agree with everything you stated. However, while parties should ideally make one another aware of their respective "deficiencies" (for lack of a better term), there is not always an opportunity for that. This is especially the case in media that is disseminated to a large audience. We all know, for example, how political messages can lead to misunderstandings at times.

I find your comments on visual communication to be particularly insightful. Keeping a listener/audience entertained or engaged is crucial to effective communication. At a medical school interview I heard that the average attention span of a person when listening to a lecture or speech is about 12 minutes. If you don't do something to recapture a person's attention every 12 minutes (i.e. by engaging the audience or employing different methods of communication), the majority of everything else you say may be ignored by the listener. Unless, of course, the listener realizes and decides on his or her own to pay attention again.

    1. yay comments!
I agree with both of you. Lack of certain opportunities do hinder communication. And nothing is completely 100% efficient. Although wouldn't the world be a better place if that were the case?
On a side note, we should all learn Esperanto. If you don't know, they (i forget who) created this language in the hopes of breaking this great language barrier among countries. It's supposed to be really simple. I think I tried once and got lazy. The end of my story.

  3. Hi, Melissa-san,

I agree that there should be messages you really want to convey in your podcast project. To find what you really want to say with the project could be a hard task.

    Good luck!!

    1. Thank you. I think it's a more difficult task than some people think. Even going through our podcast, I had some concerns originally. But I think we did well on our script. Maybe.
